What was the highlight of the Rotman experience?

My role as Academic Representative of the MFRM class coupled with my invaluable experience at McKinsey. Liaising between the inspiring faculty members and students fostered my leadership skills and made me realize that I enjoy driving positive change. Similarly within the internship, I stepped out of my comfort zone towards accelerated growth where I accomplished things I didn’t know I could. Together, I feel that my Rotman experience built the bridge from my undergraduate to the industry.

Did Rotman and the MFRM program meet your expectations?

I would say the program exceeded them in some areas and could be improved in others. It was hard to strike a balance between academic results and personal/professional development. However, I also understood how the faculty packed the schedules to enhance the all-roundedness of the program. (Note: Joanna studied the 8-month program. From September 2020 our program will be 10-months allowing for more balance between academic classes and personal/professional development).

At the same time, the program exceeded my expectations for networking and professional events and coaching; truly what I was hoping for when I joined a business school. It’s all a question of time management.

How was your experience with the Rotman community?

I didn’t realize the value of the Rotman community until after graduation. That’s when I started noticing how broad the Rotman network is and how incredibly useful it is when networking. I am also the Social Ambassador for the upcoming Rotman Reunion 2019, which has given me access to the tremendous behind-the-scenes that is involved into continuous successful alumni engagement.

What would you say to someone considering the MFRM program?

Your experience is truly how you shape it. There will be times when things won’t be as green but if you are willing to take the chance to make the most out of it, Rotman will show you what you are capable of achieving.

Remember to do what you love, and love what you do. I hope that MFRM will help you figure out what you love to do as much as it helped me.

How has the program helped you in your career so far?

Within the Risk Advanced Analytics in the Risk Practice of McKinsey & Co. in Toronto and New York, I worked on a global operational risk dashboard to create a Business Intelligence product that would be used both internally and externally to add value to the client’s enterprise risk structure. My experience engendered sophisticated communication skills to conduct presentations effectively as well as the ability to interact with professionals at all levels of the organization.

Now, I am using my experience to lead multiple projects independently to innovate with data analytics at the Ontario Securities Commission to help foster fair and efficient capital markets.
