So You’re Studying for the Exams – But Are You Actually Learning? - Luke, MMA Class of 2021

Quick Info

  • Previous education -  Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Toronto

Why did you decide to study the Master of Management Analytics program?

As a person in love with data science and analytics, the Management Analytics program at Rotman approached me as an opportunity to provide the necessary exposure to data analysis techniques. With the world emitting billions of gigabytes of personal, transactional, and operational data each day, answering business questions directly related to future sustainability without leveraging data is impossible. MMA program looked like a great platform to gain the necessary knowledge to connect my passion and career path. Data tells a unique story, but not to everyone because often they are implied and hidden. I expect the MMA program teach me the language to interpret each story to those who do not understand data.

What were your top reasons for choosing Rotman?

Choosing Rotman over other schools was not difficult. First, having taken some undergrad courses taught by the MMA faculty was a great “teaser” of what MMA would look like, and I greatly enjoyed the courses. Second, I was already familiar with Rotman and its vision. I had various classes at the Rotman building and attended several events hosted by Rotman. Third and the most important reason, the practicum. It is difficult as a student to apply the knowledge learned in classrooms. Rotman’s practicum looked like an ideal solution.

What are you looking forward to most in the program?

To learn best practices and technical skills to effectively analyze data, as well as to communicate the findings to stakeholders. Also, transforming classroom and textbook knowledge to applicable industry knowledge.

What do you expect to gain in your next 11 months at Rotman?

Various algorithms and theories behind each algorithm, technical skills to effectively handle data, and effective ways to communicate results back to businesses.

How have you found the online experience at Rotman?

I had low expectations when I found out the program will be delivered mostly via online platforms. However, my experience so far has been great. I strongly believe one can learn as much if not more through his/her peers versus just attending lectures. My initial thought was online platforms would severely hinder such an experience.  But Rotman proved me wrong – I am getting the equal quality of education while saving some commuting time. Also, the Class of 2021 is an amazing class. Everyone is very helpful, supportive of each other, and shows the definition of “work hard, play hard.” Outdoor social events organized by some of the students are extremely engaging.

Did COVID-19 make you re-consider your decision to study this year, and if so, what made you decide to continue?

Yes, I was considering deferring enrolment at first. Then I thought covid-19 did not force the world to abandon offline learning, it merely accelerated pre-existing the shift from offline to online. If this is going to be an emerging trend, I might as well welcome it.

The Master of Management Analytics is designed to give students the advanced data management, analytics, and communication skills needed to become an analytics professional.
