Career support for Master of Finance students

As you might imagine, students on the Master of Finance (MFin) program at Rotman have different career aspirations and goals when they start the program. Whether the goal is to move into a more senior position, or pivot to a different area of finance, our Career Services team are ready to provide the support and guidance to help them along the way. In this post we look at some of the common questions we hear from prospective students.

What type of services do the career team offer to Master of Finance students?

As a Master of Finance student at Rotman you have access to our full suite of career services such as 1:1 career coaching, exclusive Rotman networking events, industry-specific speaker events, professional skills workshops and 24/7 online resources.

Are students allocated a certain number of coaching hours and does the service expire on graduation?

As a Rotman student you will be assigned a career consultant who can offer you coaching on career planning, networking, resumes and cover letters, interview preparation, personal branding and LinkedIn and online job search with unlimited appointments while you are a student at Rotman. Upon your graduation you may access career services as an alumni through our team.

Is the career service mainly for people who want to change jobs?  I’m looking to progress in my current organization.

Whether you are looking for a career change, job change or progressing within your organization your career consultant will work with you on achieving your career goals. We have worked with people who want to move from working in accounting or back offices to front office. One of the MFin students in a recent class told us how they wanted to get to a role in the big banks in either private equity or risk.  We discussed the strategies they could use to make that happen which included networking with Rotman alumni as well others in their network. After putting in the time to make networking a top priority along with highlighting the new skills they had gained from their MFin they went from working for a firm in the accounting industry and landed a great job in risk in one of the big banks. We have also had success with other students who were able to make changes to the front office in boutique companies as well as some of the big consulting firms and big banks.

How well connected is Rotman to the industry?

Along with our career consulting team, our industry advisor team works with hundreds of employers across 16 industries. Our graduates have achieved success in both small-to-medium and large corporations. Each Industry Advisor is focused on developing new business based on student preferences and industry trends.
