Staying ahead of the field. Sarah Wang, MFin '22

This is part 2 of our post about MFin ‘22 student Sarah Wang. In part 1, Sarah told us about what brought her to the MFin, her leadership aspirations and how she’s balancing work, school and CFA studying. (We don’t know how she does it!)

Now, Sarah shares her thoughts on pursuing a degree during a global pandemic, making connections with classmates beyond the classroom and what potential applicants can do (hint: reach out!)

Studying during a global pandemic

With so much uncertainly due to Covid-19, Sarah admits she had doubts about starting the MFin program in September 2020. However, after speaking to Catherine (Assistant Director, Recruitment and Admissions), who went over the program’s plans for supporting students during such a difficult time, Sarah was reassured.

Sarah has been impressed by how the program has been able to adjust to the new and every-changing public health regulations and guidelines.

Being away from school for a couple of years, I am amazed by the MFin program’s flexibility in accommodating my transition back to school and the level of learning and career support that Rotman offers in this unprecedented time,” she says

“I’d like to thank Chay (Academic Director), Kelly (Associate Director, Program Services) and Analise (Program Manager) for coordinating everything so smoothly and promptly, addressing any concerns I had along the way. For example, in late October, we had to switch from a hybrid format to an entirely online format due to Ontario’s latest Covid guidelines. The program was able to rapidly coordinate and ensure that we are getting the same studying experience safe and healthy at home.”

Outside of the (virtual) classroom: What the Rotman MFin has to offer

When choosing a higher-level degree to study, making sure that the courses you will study fit your career aspirations is a key consideration.  However, what takes place outside the classroom can also have a considerable impact on your development.

“The extracurricular activities are definitely a highlight of my Rotman experience. I’ve made new friends in the process. For example, earlier this term, as a finalist of this year’s RBC Deal Study Competition, I was fortunate to network with 10+ alumni and professionals from RBC Capital Markets. The networking opportunities that Rotman provides are something that I cannot find anywhere else.”

“Rotman and the MFin offer seemingly unlimited resources to learn, have fun and thrive.”

“I am interested in acquiring practical deal experience, so I participated in several industry case competitions organized by Rotman Asset Management Association and Rotman Finance Association. I am also interested in Technology and Data, so I will be applying to the Creative Destruction Lab to spark my ideas. The MFin community is also a family where we play together (like at a recent Scavenger Hunt), learn from each other and share our lives.”

While the pandemic has temporarily put a halt on exploring Toronto and surrounding areas, our location plays a part in getting the most out of the student experience.

“Before the pandemic, I might have spent my weekend at a coffee shop near Yonge and Eglington, or on the trails at Evergreen Brick Works, or at TIFF to watch a movie. I loved exploring Toronto in my spare time. I enjoy the the diverse culture that Toronto offers — this is also what I love about Rotman and the MFin program. I firmly believe that work/study/life integration is the key to a healthy and happy life.”

Her final thoughts for someone considering the Rotman Master of Finance

“Please reach out! The one-on-one chats with our admissions team are a great opportunity, and that is essentially why I decided to apply. Reach out to alumni. Reach out to me, I am hoping that my experience can inspire some of you reading the article.” she says.

"The Rotman MFin is here to help you learn, make new friends, have fun and succeed in the finance industry in Toronto and globally."
