Big Data Cup 2022

Announcing the finalists for the Big Data Cup 2022 competition, focused on women’s hockey stats, data and analytics.

 

Sports fans across the board love to keep score and track the performance of their favorite players and teams.

 

The Big Data Cup 2022 zeroed in on women’s hockey and brought together sports and data enthusiasts for a friendly competition to draw out player and tournament statistics and predictions. Finalists were selected in July and had the opportunity to present their findings to a panel of NHL executives. Prizes were awarded to these top qualifiers:

 

Student finalists

  1. Ethan Baron, Daniel Hocevar, Kabir Malik, and Aaron White from the University of Toronto - submission entitled, "Holistic Player Evaluation with RIPP" 
  2. Anders Lempia from the University of Pittsburgh - submission entitled, "Improving the Condition of the Puck"

Open finalists

  1. Robyn Ritchie, Alon Harell, and Phil Shreeves a team from Simon Fraser University - submission entitled, "Pass Evaluation in Women's Olympic Hockey"
  2. Quinn MacLean, Senior Data Science Consultant at Slalom - submission entitled, "Introducing DPAA: A Bayesian Approach"
  3. Ben Howell, Carleen Markey, An Nguyen, and Nayan Patel a team from The University of Texas at Austin - submission entitled, "Highway to the Danger Zone"

When asked to reflect on their experience in the competition, participants shared the following:

Participation in the Big Data Cup 2022 competition was open to all individuals regardless of background, experience, previous analysis, or public work. We thank everyone who participated in the virtual environment and engaged with our hosts and sponsors throughout the process.
