Bio

Joel Baum is a Professor of Strategic Management. He recently completed a term as Associate Editor of Academy of Management Review (2018-20)sits on the editorial board of Strategic Management Journal and is founding co-editor of Strategic Organization. Recent awards include Most Impactful Article, Journal of Business Venturing (2010) and Organization and Management Theory Distinguished Scholar, Academy of Management (2011). Joel is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and the Royal Scociety of Canada. Joel teaches Communicating Strategy and Strategic Change in the MBA program, and Research Methods in the PhD program. He has studied patterns of competition and cooperation and their influence on firm and individual behavior, learning, and performance in diverse settings including biotechnology, investment banking, private military services, and Mozilla software development. Currently his research focuses on the rivalry between emerging cellular agriculture companies producing alternative meats and proteins and traditional producers of animal meat and protein.

Game of Thrones

Joel has recently been posting short articles digging into various facets of the evolving web of connections— forged in both friendship and discord — among the series’ characters. The articles examine the global characteristics and features of the social network, key characters’ positions within the broader network, the influence of these network positions on their fates over Seasons 1-7 and the implications of their current positions for Season 8. Research and Teaching Interests

Teaches MBA courses in Communicating Strategy and Strategic Change, and PhD courses in Strategic Organization and Research Methods. Joel is interested in patterns of competition and cooperation and their influence on firm and individual behavior, learning and performance.
