Find your personal negotiation style

By Stephanie Hodnett

What is your personal negotiating style? Has it changed at all in the era of Zoom?

We all negotiate all day long, when you receive an assignment from your manager, when you collaborate with a colleague on a project, and even when you sit down to eat with your family. It is core to the human experience of living among one another.

Negotiating is a skill honed over a lifetime, instinctively. To improve at it, the first step is to understand your personal style. Do you look for ways to create shared value for both parties? Or are you more of a win-lose type negotiator? Do you rely on your charm and personality, or reason and logic? And have those tools served you well so far, or are you interested in exploring new methods?

In Negotiation Foundations, we will examine proven methods for improving your negotiation skills. We all negotiate virtually now, so it makes sense to deliver the course that way. We have taken care to ensure that you will still receive all the benefits of the in-class experience, including expanding your network, and learning from peers.

You will perform a self-assessment to understand your own negotiating tendencies and how they can be improved, and be given a toolkit for creating successful negotiating outcomes. The focus of the program will be on improving your ability to negotiate from a remote work environment that is a reality of so many of us during COVID-19. And you will meet a new cohort of peers who will expand your professional network and provide a shared experience.

At a time when many of us have found our contacts narrowed to those we already know, this will be a way to connect with some new people and expand horizons in a dynamic way. You’ll leave with a Rotman certificate, a set of new colleagues and friends, and new methods for negotiating in today’s world. We hope you’ll join us in June.
