February 24, 2020

Toronto – For the fourth time, a team from the Master of Financial Engineering program at Baruch College in New York City has won the Rotman International Trading Competition. The 17th annual competition was held at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management from February 20 to 22. It attracted more than 300 participants including student traders, analysts and risk managers representing 47 universities from across Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia.

A team from the University of Calgary finished second and a team from LUISS University of Rome moved up to 3rd place from 4th place last year. A team from the University of Toronto with students drawn from different programs finished 10th. Team members included Rotman Commerce student Arthur Nagomy, Jerry Luo and Esa Meng from the Master of Financial Economics program, Vlad Kovalenko from the Commerce program at the University of Toronto Mississauga, and two students from the University of Mannheim, Niklas Schaefer and Jan Ruck, who were selected to the team while visiting the University of Toronto Scarborough last semester.

“Our  cases  are  designed  to  promote  learning  about  effective  decision-making  strategies  in  a  volatile  and  uncertain  world. Whether the teams win or lose, the competition is designed so that the skills, learning-by-doing experience and network that participants develop will help them reach future career and personal aspirations,” says Prof. Tom McCurdy, the Bonham Chair in Finance, who is also the academic director of the lab and the competition. “Congratulations to all of the teams for their preparation and enthusiastic participation. Competition was at a high level throughout the entire weekend.”

The competition was held in the Rotman School’s BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab and utilized the Rotman Interactive Trader, an order-driven market simulator, which was developed in-house at the Rotman School.  During the competition teams participated in various activities including electronic and outcry trading cases, seminars with industry practitioners, and social events with their fellow competitors.

The gold sponsor of the competition was BP Canada. Silver sponsors were Citadel Securities and MathWorks. Bronze sponsors were S&P Global Market Intelligence, Prodigy Finance, and the Rotman Master of Financial Risk Management program.
