Students from the University of Warsaw Win the Rotman European Trading Competition 2022.

September 21, 2022

Toronto – Student traders representing the University of Warsaw won the first and second place prizes in the fifth edition of the Rotman European Trading Competition (RETC 2022). The competition, hosted by the BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, took place online this year, with cases running on the Lab’s RIT Market Simulator platform.  The winning team from the University of Warsaw took first place in all three RIT Decision Cases, while a team from the University of Economics in Bratislava finished third.

The RIT Decision Cases for the 2022 iteration of the competition included an electricity case, sponsored by Enel, an interest rate case, sponsored by the EIB (European Investment Bank) Institute, and an algorithmic trading case sponsored by Intesa Sanpaolo.  The competition allowed students from across Europe to connect and engage with each other, as well as network with sponsors.

“The competition brought everyone together and facilitated unique interactions leveraging the RIT Market Simulator and associated Decision Cases. These are curated learning applications under the Simulation-Based Learning Portfolio managed by the Lab,” says Bachir Chehab, associate director of the BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab.

“Our first RETC was held at Luiss University in 2012. The five iterations since have included more than 580 students representing 87 universities from 38 countries in Europe. Many universities have participated in the competition every year since its inception The RETC alumni are now an impressive network of experts”, adds Prof. Tom McCurdy, who is the Bonham Chair in International Finance at the Rotman School and the founder and current academic co-director of the Lab.

This year’s online competition faced several logistical challenges due to the current situation in Europe, but still attracted 90 participants including student traders, analysts and risk managers representing 16 universities.

The Rotman School’s BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab is designed to promote experiential learning: integrating markets, data and research with practice making financial decisions. The competition cases are implemented on the highly acclaimed RIT Market Simulator, which is used by 60 universities and financial institutions around the world. The Lab is utilized by classes in many of the school’s programs including its Master of Finance, Master of Financial Risk Management, MBA, and Rotman Commerce programs.  Further information on the lab is available on its website. Further details about the RETC are available online.
