Honours for Rotman School Faculty in Sustainability and Antitrust Economics

June 10, 2024

Toronto – A professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, Kate Odziemkowska, has been named as the 2024 Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability (ARCS) Emerging Sustainability Scholar. A second Rotman professor, Heski Bar-Isaac, is the co-author of a paper which received the Robert F. Lanzillotti Prize for the best paper in antitrust economics accepted for presentation at the International Industrial Organization Conference held last month in Boston.

The honour for Odziemkowska, who is an assistant professor of strategic management, recognizes a scholar in the area of corporate sustainability, who is likely to make significant contributions to the advancement of corporate sustainability scholarship. It was announced at the annual conference of ARCS held earlier this month at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Bar-Isaac, who is a Distinguished Professor of Economics & Finance, received the award for the paper, Acquihiring for Monopsony Power, co-written with Prof. Justin Johnson of the Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management and Prof. Volker Nocke of the University of Mannheim.

Prof. Odziemkowska’s research focuses on cooperative strategy—formal interorganizational relationships such as alliances or collaborations—in nonmarket settings. More specifically, on how and when strategically aligning with often-adversarial stakeholders, such as social activists, NGOs, and local communities can benefit firms, and the implications for stakeholders and society. She joined the Rotman School in 2022.

Bar-Isaac is also a professor of integrative thinking, finance, and economy analysis and policy. His research focuses on applied microeconomic theory, in particular applications of information economics, game theory, and contract theory to industrial organization, organizational economics, and corporate finance. He is a managing editor of Economic Journal and is an associate editor with RAND Journal of Economics.
