Quick Info

  • Previous education - Bachelor of Business Administration, Financial Analysis, Mount Royal University

Why did you decide to study the Master of Financial Risk Management program?

The MFRM program is a great way to expose yourself to Capital Markets in Toronto. The program was pioneered due to the increasing amount of regulations that banks and financial institutions are facing and the ever-growing importance of risk professionals. The MFRM program is also proactive to changes in the workplace; currently, there is a shift towards financial technology as well as data analysis skills in Python, because of this, the MFRM team has been quick to introduce a new class in the past year called Innovations in Financial Technology that helps address the needs of employers in exposing students to the changing work environment. The program is intensive, but the quantitative and soft skills you learn are invaluable.

What were your top reasons for choosing Rotman?

The Rotman School of Management is a prestigious school that has world-renowned staff, alumni, and ranks among the top business schools in Canada perennially. Outside of academics, Rotman provides more in terms of self-development through the Self-Development Lab, career coaching as well as webinars that occur on a daily basis. All of these factors lead me to choose Rotman as the institution to pursue my graduate studies.

What are you looking forward to most in the program?

The most exciting part of the program would have to be the Risk Management Project that happens in January and February. Having the ability to work alongside risk professionals and apply our knowledge is something that is unique to this program and will help us apply our theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom.

How have you found the online experience at Rotman?

The online class experience has had its ups and downs. Most professors and students are familiar with in-class methods of instruction so there is a learning curve for all parties involved. Professors do a great job of keeping you engaged through polls and hourly breaks that help you regain focus. Another benefit is when classes were in-person if you missed something in class you’d have to stay back and ask your professor after class or set up a time during office hours, now on an online platform all your classes are recorded and you are able to re-watch at your own pace when necessary.

The Master of Financial Risk Management is a full-time program designed to prepare ambitious young professionals for careers in risk management and finance.
