MMA Online Datathon 2019: Participants Stories

Quick Info

  • Previous education - University of British Columbia, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc.)

Why did you decide to study the Master of Management Analytics program?

I was drawn to the Master of Management Analytics (MMA) program because it bridges the gap between statistics and management decisions. The amount of data available is often overwhelming and it is easy to get lost in the technicalities of data analysis. The MMA program teaches students what to focus on in order to generate business insights.

The program also provides an accelerated overview of data processing techniques. While quantitative skills are a necessity, this is just the starting point. I believe effective communication is what unlocks the true potential of data science. The MMA program offers a balanced curriculum that develops both technical and soft skills.

What were your top reasons for choosing Rotman?

Rotman has a great reputation, renowned faculty members and a large alumni network.

Now that the program has begun, I can attest to the high caliber of instruction and it has been invaluable learning from the other students. Everyone you interact with is enthusiastic about the MMA and you can feel the amount of care that went into designing the program.

What are you looking forward to most in the program?

Working on the practicum project. I am looking forward to working with “real” data and applying what we learn in class.

What do you expect to gain in your next 11 months at Rotman?

I am eager to strengthen my technical skills and learning more about interesting data science applications. In RSM 8431, we get a variety of lectures from experts in different topics. For example, we just finished a series of lectures on AI ethics and it was fascinating to get a sociological perspective on the implications of AI.

Additionally, I am looking forward to expanding my network through the professional development opportunities.

How have you found the online experience at Rotman?

Everyone has been making the best of a challenging situation. The instructors have adjusted their content for online delivery. Classes are still interactive with opportunities for discussion and group work.

Additionally, Rotman has helped students prepare for online classes. Textbooks were mailed out, networking sessions moved online and every student received an award to offset technology costs (I.e. second monitor, webcam, etc.).

Did COVID-19 make you re-consider your decision to study this year, and if so, what made you decide to continue?

Yes, I considered deferring. Ultimately, I decided to continue because it is unclear when the situation with COVID-19 will improve. Everyone was forced to adapt, and nothing drives innovation like necessity so I felt confident Rotman would make the appropriate adjustments. The more I thought about it, the more I felt thankful I had the option of continuing my education in the midst of a global pandemic.

The Master of Management Analytics is designed to give students the advanced data management, analytics, and communication skills needed to become an analytics professional.
