Why We Need to Engage Young People in Corporate Governance

Livestream presented by Matt Fullbrook, Manager of the David & Sharon Johnston Centre for Corporate Governance Innovation at the Rotman School of Management.

About the Livestream

When we think about corporate governance, we picture senior executives and directors with decades of experience. Even in an era of increased focus on diversity and inclusion, a "young director" is often perceived as, at best, a niche specialist in areas such as social media, the gig economy, or other "millennial" issues. By excluding young people from corporate governance, we seem to be forgetting that many of history's great thinkers, leaders and entrepreneurs made their biggest impact early in their careers. We also neglect to create and empower a pipeline of people who understand how boards, senior managers and stakeholders work together to make excellent decisions. The more we involve young people in corporate governance, the more high-performing executives, directors and advisors we will have to support the ongoing effectiveness of our organizations. Examining the current landscape of boards and executive teams Exploring the ways that young people can make a positive impact on organizational decisions Highlighting the many ways that young professionals can get involved in corporate governance - beyond just serving on boards
